1944: Steve Fossett, the businessman and record-setting aviator, sailor and adventurer, is born in Jackson, Tenn. Fossett made his fortune in the financial services industry and was best known for many world records, including becoming the first person to fly solo nonstop around the world in a balloon. On Sept. 3, 2007, Fossett was reported missing after the plane he was flying over the Nevada desert failed to return. His crash site and some remains were discovered in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California in October 2008.
