1922: Jazz musician, composer and bandleader Charles Mingus, whose best-known albums include "Pithecanthropus Erectus," "Mingus Ah Um," "Mingus Dynasty" and "The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady," is born in Nogales, Ariz. He died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at age 56 on Jan. 5, 1979.
