1989: Activist Abbie Hoffman, who co-founded the Youth International Party (aka the "Yippies") in the 1960s, commits suicide at the age of 52 in Solebury Township, Pennsylvania, by swallowing 150 phenobarbital tablets along with hard liquor. Hoffman is also known as a member of the "Chicago Seven," a group of protestors arrested and tried for conspiracy and inciting to riot during the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
