DESERT EDGE, Calif. - The Riverside County Coroner's Office released the identity of a man who was shot and killed by police officers in Desert Edge on March 19. Donald Gibbs, a 52-year-old man from Desert Hot Springs, was shot in an open field near Dillon Road and Johnson Road at about 9:40 a.m.
The shooting took place after deputies were called to an assault. A deputy found a man who was physically beating a woman. Due to the situation, the deputy requested additional deputies, a helicopter, and medical services. The deputy approached the suspect and noticed he was armed with a knife. The deputy ordered the suspect to drop the knife. The suspect refused and continued to assault the female. The suspect then threatened to stab the woman and a deputy-involved shooting occurred.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department Central Homicide Unit handled the investigation.
March 19 - Man dies after officer-involved shooting:
According to information provided by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, the suspect died from his injures at an area hospital.
"At approximately 9:30 AM, deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff Department's Palm Desert Station responded to a report of an assault that was occurring in a desert area of Dillon Road and Johnson Road, located in the unincorporated community of Desert Edge.
A deputy responded to the scene and located a male suspect who was physically beating a woman. Due to the situation, the deputy requested additional deputies, a helicopter, and medical services. The deputy approached the suspect and noticed he was armed with a knife. The deputy ordered the suspect to drop the knife. The suspect refused and continued to assault the female. The suspect then threatened to stab the woman and a deputy involved shooting occurred.
Deputies provided medical aid and called for medical services to assist. Medical staff arrived at the location, provided medial aid, and transported the suspect to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The victim was also transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. The suspect's name will not be released at this time, pending notification of next of kin. The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave per department policy. The involved deputy’s name will not be released at this time. No other deputies or citizens were injured during the deputy involved shooting.
This is an active and on-going investigation. Investigators from the Riverside County Sheriff Department's Central Homicide Unit responded and assumed the investigation.
