SALTON CITY, Calif. - At 4 a.m. Thursday morning, seven Mexican nationals were arrested in a chilling attempt to pass through the Salton City checkpoint in the back of an almost freezing semi-tractor trailer.
A canine team at the checkpoint alerted agents to search the trailor. Upon inspection, agents discovered one female and six males between the ages of 20 and 52 hidden in the trailer within a load of watermelons. The trailer was being kept at 48 degrees Fahrenheit.
The driver, also in the United States illegally, was arrested on suspicion of alien smuggling.
The suspect, vehicle, and seven others were placed in the custody of Border Patrol.
