A 22-year-old Palm Desert man was arrested today for allegedly striking a business sign while driving under the influence and running from the scene.
The crash was reported about 1:50 a.m. at Country Club Drive and Harris Lane. A Toyota Camry was being driven east on Country Club when the motorist struck a median, drove up a curb and down into a ravine, sheriff's Sgt. Radek Horkel said.
"The vehicle continued traveling through the ravine and striking a business sign belonging to the Sure Save Self Storage," Horkel said.
The vehicle stopped in front of a nearby apartment building and the driver ran into the complex. Deputies found him in the complex, Horkel said.
The driver, Mark Adam Lopez, was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries and was later arrested. A preliminary investigation showed alcohol was a factor in the crash, Horkel said. No other injuries were reported.
Lopez was booked into county jail in Indio and later posted a $2,500 bond, according to jail records.
