INDIO, Calif. - More than 50 commercial drivers passing through the Coachella Valley today were ticketed by California Highway Patrol officers, and one was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of an illegal drug.
CHP officers from the Indio and El Centro offices and the Desert Hills Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility targeted commercial drivers violating traffic laws on Interstate 10 and state Route 86 between 7 a.m. and 2 p.m yesterday, according to CHP Officer Joe Zagorski.
Officers also inspected vehicles for mechanical problems, he said.
Officers cited 36 drivers for "primary collision factor" violations, 14 for mechanical violations and one for driving with a suspended license, Zagorski said.
One driver was arrested for driving under the influence of drugs, he said.
Fifteen vehicles were inspected and most had "dangerous" issues and taken out of service until they could be repaired, Zagorski said.
