COACHELLA, Calif. -

Officials with the city of Coachella hope a new Walmart will bring new life to a neighborhood shopping center that's been missing a pillar for two years.

The new Walmart Neighborhood Market had its grand opening Wednesday morning. The store is located at 83053 Avenue 48, and its the first Walmart in Coachella.

Walmart purchased the building where Albertsons used to operate. Officials said more than a half dozen businesses are located in the shopping center, including several restaurants, a dry cleaners and a Bank of America.

Management with Walmart, the city of Coachella and the Coachella Chamber of Commerce were all at Wednesday's grand opening celebration.

"I know the tenants are excited because Walmart is going to bring more traffic to the center," said Councilman Steven Hernandez. He also said having a grocery store once again will be great for residents of northwest Coachella who've had to travel further to buy groceries.

Coachella Chamber of Commerce President Mike Etheridge said, "Every time a new business comes into our city new jobs are created, and at this new Walmart location about 65 new jobs were produced."

Etheridge also noted that many construction jobs were created while the Walmart Neighborhood Market was being built.

The store will be open everyday from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. For more information, visit coachella.org.

The first Walmart Neighborhood Market opened in 1998, and the first in California opened last year in Huntington Beach.
