RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -

A motorist suspected of drunken driving was arrested after barreling through a gas station in Rancho Mirage and into a fire hydrant, a sheriff's sergeant said today.

Sheriff's deputies received a call at 7:30 p.m. Thursday about the crash at a Chevron station parking lot near the intersection of Bob Hope and Gerald Ford drives.

The driver, Salvador Ibarra Rodriguez, 46, of Desert Hot Springs, escaped injury but deputies determined that alcohol played a role in the mishap, Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Radek Horkel said.

Rodriguez, who parked his Chevrolet Blazer and stayed at the scene, was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor drunken driving, the sheriff's department reported.
