Authorities were at the Cactus City Rest Area searching for the remains of a retired Army captain who was declared dead after being missing since September.

37-year-old Julia Jacobson, a San Diego resident, was last seen in Ontario on the night of Sept. 2.

She was with her wheaten terrier, Boogie, according to a social media page dedicated to her.

That evening, a friend received a text message from Jacobson's cellphone stating that she was in the Palm Springs area, San Diego police reported.

At the time of her disappearance, Jacobson may have been planning to travel to Palm Springs or to Big Bear, her sister stated.

An investigation into her disappearance led authorities to believe Jacobson was murdered in Ontario, based on forensic analysis of her car.

"We did find evidence that Julia was not missing by choice - that she had been murdered," said Ontario Detective Melissa Ramirez.

On Oct. 13, Jacobson's ex-husband, Dalen Larry Ware, was arrested at his home in Arizona and charged with her death.

According to Julia Jacobson's brother, Jon Jacobson, the victim and Ware had a volatile relationship.

"There's been a lot of emotional abuse; a lot of physical abuse," said Jon Jacobson.

There also was an indication they were still in frequent contact, with dozens of threats made by the ex.

Julia Jacobson, who served two tours of duty in Iraq, still has not been located, but investigators believed the body could possibly be in Cactus City.

Over 100 people spent Wednesday morning searching around the rest area. Ontario and San Diego police, along with San Bernardino Sheriff's Department were on scene.

Investigators could not find any evidence that Jacobson's body was in the area. The search ended at 4 p.m.
