INDIO, Calif. - We are learning that a valley teacher is among the injured during the Las Vegas mass shooting that left at least 58 dead and 515 injured.
Alexis Arias, a teacher at Amistad Continuation High School is said to have been shot according to her aunt.
Mary Perry, Desert Sands Unified School District spokesperson says Arias is in stable condition and Las Vegas doctors are evaluating what kind of treatment she will be receiving.
School district officials says it is thankful that Arias' injuries are not life threatening and will wait for further word from the family before releasing more information.
Other staff members were also at the concert but were not injured.
Arias' family issued this statement:
First and foremost, we want to thank family, friends, fellow teachers, Desert Sands School District, and the community for the overwhelming support we've received, and the positive thoughts and prayers for Alexis.
Alexis sustained a gunshot wound during the Las Vegas attack and in the process of escaping, also sustained a broken pelvis. Alexis' condition is stabilized and she is recovering at this time with hospital physicians monitoring her progress. For the short term, surgery has been ruled out, but a definitive discharge date has not been provided to the family. Her husband, parents and other family members are at her side.
Alexis considers herself one of the lucky ones as she is aware of the lives lost during the tragedy. Continued thoughts and prayers would be appreciated. Once again, thank you for all of the support.
Counselors are at Amistad High School helping students cope, they are also at other DSUSD schools because other students may know Arias.
