INDIO, Calif. -

Starting today, an overflow parking lot will be closed at the Larson Justice Center in Indio for construction of a new parking structure.

The lot, on Oasis Street and Plaza Avenue, is expected to be closed through January while the three-story, 837-space East County Parking Structure is being built.

The lot next to the courthouse still will be open, and overflow parking temporarily will move to the Date Festival grounds off Arabia Street, according to county Supervisor John Benoit's office.

Benoit said pedestrians and motorists should take extra precautions in the area of Highway 111 and Oasis because of a potential increase in vehicular and foot traffic.

Construction will start this summer on the parking structure and an adjacent lot, which will increase the number of spaces and serve the courthouse, the county law departments, the to-be-built jail and the Date Festival.
