PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -

A lot of people may be feeling under the weather. The number of states reporting widespread flu activity is rising. Every year, the flu claims about 36,000 lives. Some good news - California hasn't seen a bad outbreak of the flu this season.

Desert Regional Medical Center said it usually see about 50 people per week when it's not flu season. Now they're seeing about 130 people per week. Fortunately there's a lot we can do to help ourselves.

Infection Preventionist Michael Connors said it's critical to get your vaccine if you haven't already because the flu virus is circulating. H1N1 is in this year's shots. It does take two weeks for the shot to build up immunity,  so you still need tol be overcautious.

Wash your hands often and stay home if you feel even the onset of symptoms.
