THOUSAND PALMS, Calif. - There are only so many ways you can prepare for an unpredictable earthquake, so that's why it's so important to make sure your earthquake kit is loaded with the necessary equipment in the event of 'the big one' striking in the Coachella Valley. 


Earth Quake Preparedness Check List

  • Earthquake straps – secure tall furniture, televisions, and appliances to avoid hazards and damage during an earthquake.
  • Earthquake resistant picture hangers – minimize hazards and damage from falling pictures and artwork.
  • Child safety latches – Secure cabinet doors and drawers to avoid hazards and damage during an earthquake.
  • Wheeled tote (or cooler or trash can) for storing earthquake supplies.
  • Pet notice decals for front and back doors.
  • Multipurpose tool (that can act as a knife, file, pliers, and screwdriver)
  • Hammer or pry bar and other related tools
  • Wrench or shut off tool for shutting off utilities
  • Flashlight & battery operated lighting
  • Batteries (additional batteries for all battery powered devices)
  • Radio (battery-powered, solar, or hand-crank NOAA radio) for updates on the situation
  • Extra set of car keys and house keys
  • Work gloves
  • Sun protection – hats, sunblock, sunglasses, canopy or tent
  • Battery operated fan
  • Bug spray
  • First aid kit
  • Emergency blanket
  • Whistle
  • Tape – Duct tape or similar
  • Plastic sheeting
  • Household bleach (unscented regular bleach)
  • Water purification tablets
  • Disinfecting wipes
  • Rubber gloves
  • Manual can opener
  • Basic utensils to prepare and serve meals
