A pregnant woman who was trying to enter the United States illegally nearly drowned in the All-American Canal Tuesday afternoon, according to Border Patrol agents with the El Centro Sector Station.
Around 2:20 p.m., a citizen flagged down a Border Patrol agent to tell him a woman was in the canal and needed help.
Two agents went to the bank of the All-American Canal near the intersection of Anza Road and Weed Road, just west of Downtown Calexico, and located a pregnant woman in the water.
Officials said the agents threw a rescue bag to the woman and pulled her to safety. She was complaining of numbness in her legs, indicating possible early signs of hypothermia.
The woman was taken to the El Centro Regional Hospital by emergency responders.
After receiving treatment, she was transported to the El Centro Sector Station for processing due to her illegal entry into the U.S., according to a release from the Border Patrol.
Agents said if you see any suspicious activity, call the Border Community Threat Hotline at 1-800-901-2003.
