PALM DESERT, Calif. - Police arrested a man for driving while intoxicated after allegedly crashing his car into a fire hydrant in Palm Desert.

It happened shortly after 11:50 p.m. Saturday in the 7700 block of California Ave.

The force and amount of water caused a sink hole. The driver was able to get out before the car started to sink.

The driver, Ross Berman, 37, of Palm Desert, was evaluated by Riverside County Fire, and taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Berman was arrested for driving while intoxicated and was booked into the Riverside County Jail in Banning.

Coachella Valley Water District responded and closed California Ave. from Ave. of the States to Warner Trail, to complete repairs.
