Pediatric neurosurgeon Ben Carson will speak in Indian Wells tonight to wrap up the Desert Town Hall annual speaker series.

The talk starts at 6 p.m. at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa.

Carson, who grew up in low-income, inner-city Detroit, initially struggled in school and then improved with his mother's encouragement.

He later went to medical school and became director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University.

He was credited as the first surgeon to separate twins joined at the head, and retired last year.

Carson was played by Cuba Gooding, Jr. in the TNT movie ``Gifted Hands:The Ben Carson Story,'' and has written several books, including New York Times bestseller ``America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great.''

At 5 p.m., Carson and his wife Candy will speak to local students about their Carson Scholars Program, which awards scholarships and encourages reading.
