Man dead after armed robbery and police chase

COACHELLA, Calif. - Update 2/10: The suspect who died has been identified as 27-year-old Justin Guerrero of Delano, California.

Update:  A suspect involved in a Coachella chase is dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. A second suspect has been taken into custody according to Indio Police Sergeant Dan Marshall.

The two suspects were involved in an attempted robbery of a Brinks armored car at the Wells Fargo at the intersection of Monroe and Highway 111 in Indio at 11:53 a.m. Shots were fired during the attempted robbery. It is unclear if they were fired by the suspects or by the Brinks employee.

The suspects fled the scene following the robbery and crashed their initial escape vehicle. They got in a new vehicle, a previously stolen red Cadillac on Rubidoux street. The suspects then crashed the red Cadillac into a wall near the Food 4 Less at 82124 U.S. Highway 111.

The two suspects fled the scene and hid in the Coachella Mobile Home Park. Residents of the community notified police that the two suspects were hiding underneath a mobile home. While police attempted to remove the suspects from under the home, one suspect apparently shot himself.

No civilians and law enforcement officers were injured during the chase and apprehension. No deputies discharged weapons during the apprehension at the mobile home park.

The Coachella Mobile Home Park has been reopened by police.

It was initially shut down while police swept the area for a chase suspect.

A vehicle thought to belong to the chase suspect is crashed into the wall behind the Food 4 Less shopping center at the intersection of Highway 111 South and 49th avenue in Coachella, according to witnesses. After the crash, the driver exited the car and jumped over the wall to escape the police in pursuit.

One Indio Patrol car sustained damaged and is still parked in the Food for Less parking lot.
