THOUSAND PALMS, Calif. -

It was a travel nightmare for dozens of bus passengers after their tour bus, traveling from Fontana to Mexico, broke down Sunday morning off Interstate 10 in Thousand Palms.

The driver exited on Bob Hope Drive and pulled over on the overpass. About 40 passengers on board waited more than nine hours in the afternoon heat as the driver attempted to fix the bus's transmission.

We're told a good Samaritan stopped off and got everyone McDonald's and drinks.

Finally a different bus arrived around 7:30 p.m. to pick up the passengers and transport them after the frustrating delay.

"As we were coming out, pulling out you could hear the bus couldn't move anymore," said Adilene Murillo, a bus passenger. "It started braking and it seemed like something was stuck on the tire."

"It's just really hot. We're holding on, the kids mostly more than anything, they're just here waiting," she added.

The bus was operated by a company called El Paso Bus Ride, based out of El Paso, Texas.
