The Marine Corps has identified a recruit who passed out during a fitness exam and died at a San Diego hospital last week.
Authorities Monday say he's 22-year-old Darnell McCowan III of Sacramento. They haven't determined the cause of his death.
McCowan collapsed last Friday at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego while taking an initial strength test to determine if he was physically fit enough for training. Recruits must be able to run 1½ miles, do three pull-ups and 44 crunches.
McCowan passed out following the run.
He was a former specialist in the Army Reserves and became a Marine private 1st class on June 18.
