Dr. Drew: Castro about as bad as human can be
From the moment I heard about Ariel Castro and his abhorrent behavior, I became absolutely disgusted with this monster.
In court Thursday, we heard the repulsive details of his narcissism and manipulation. This sick man lured three young girls into his home, then chained, beat, starved and sexually assaulted them over the course of a decade.
He blames a childhood of abuse and addiction for his corrupted mind. But he claims he's not a violent person, even going so far as to say that there was "harmony" and "consensual sex" in his Cleveland home. Well, not exactly. This was manipulative, systematic torture. Castro is probably a full-fledged psychopath.
His point of view apparently begs no alternative. Everything in his life, even if it is an illness, he used to justify his behavior. The way his brain works is like that of the lowest form of vermin. This is about as bad as a human can get. We all find it unbelievable that the brain can work like this, but it is possible and a reminder that people like this walk among us.
The sexual perpetrators I have worked with frequently have a history of sexual abuse in their childhood. In this guy's case, I have no doubt whatever abuse he went through was substantial. However, that doesn't excuse him or in any way let this guy off the hook.
Psychopaths do not appreciate that their actions affect other people. They don't have guilt or empathy and cannot understand the emotional landscape of another human being. In Castro's case, we see him insisting that his victims are "fine" because they were on YouTube videos showing some expressions of happiness at their release from captivity. He has no real understanding of what he has done to them and the torture they have suffered.
Furthermore, psychopaths act as if they have emotions, but in actuality, they really have none. Yes, he may be a porn or sex addict, but that does not begin to explain this man's depravity. I want people to know that if you suffer from addictions like this, please get help before you hurt someone. Once you hurt somebody, God help you. Not only will the force of the law come to bear on you, but if you continue down that path of depravity, you could also end up like this guy.
Now that the judge has sentenced Castro to life in prison without parole, I can only hope Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus get the proper treatment they need so they can heal and flourish as they deserve.
