Albertsons is closing dozens of stores, many of them in Southern California. We have learned that no Coachella Valley stores are on the chopping block.
The parent company of Albertsons announced plans Wednesday to close 27 under-performing stores around the country, including 19 in Southern California.
A statement from Supervalu indicated that the stores being closed are either under-performing or "non-strategic."
Albertsons spokesperson Lilia Rodriguez could not provide the number of layoffs expected, but said each affected store employs between 50-100 people. Some more senior "team members" will be able to retain their positions because of "bumping rights," which will allow them to move to other locations.
Most of the affected stores are expected to be closed by December. The closest store to the Valley, listed to be shuttered, is located in Moreno Valley. Below is a list of the stores in California that will be closed provided by KABC.
