Passports Cost More Starting Today

Increased Costs Help Off-Set Increased Printing Costs

POSTED: 8:53 am PDT July 13, 2010
Starting today, first time passport fees will cost $135 - that's up $15.

If you need a renewal -- the new fee will be $110 - up $35.

It will also cost more to add pages.

The new fees for passports will help cover the actual cost of making the blue books and cards.

The fee increases are also intended to help with the costs of emergency services provided to Americans traveling abroad.

Some local post offices say more people were trying to get their passports today ahead of the fee hikes.

According to the State Department, the demand for passports has grown to about 15-million a year as security measures have tightened, and overseas flights have dropped in price.
