1917: The Great Atlanta fire of 1917 causes $5.5 million in damages, destroying some 300 acres including 2,000 homes, businesses and churches, and displacing about 10,000 people. However, the blaze leads to only one death: a woman who suffered a heart attack after her home burnt to the ground.
