1800: John Brown, the abolitionist who led a raid on Harpers Ferry, W.Va., in 1859 an attempt to start an armed slave revolt by seizing an U.S. arsenal there, is born in Torrington, Conn. Brown's raiders were initially successful in capturing the armory but were defeated two days later and Brown was hung for treason on Dec. 2, 1859.
