1947: German-American actor and filmmaker Ernst Lubitsch, who earned three Oscar nominations for Best Director for "The Love Parade" and "The Patriot" (both in 1930) and "Heaven Can Wait" in 1944, dies of a heart attack, his sixth, at age 55 in Hollywood, Calif. Lubitsch, who also directed movies such as "Ninotchka," "The Shop Around the Corner" and "To Be or Not to Be," received an Honorary Academy Award in 1947 for his distinguished contributions to the art of the motion picture.
