1946: Singer-songwriter and pianist Richard Carpenter, one half of the pop duo group The Carpenters with his sister Karen Carpenter, is born in New Haven, Conn. The duo was best known for songs such as "(They Long to Be) Close to You," "We've Only Just Begun" and "Top of the World."
