1899: P. L. Travers, the author who created "Mary Poppins," is born Helen Lyndon Goff in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia. Travers was also an actress before beginning her writing career, but is best known for her series of children's novels about the mystical and magical English nanny Mary Poppins. Her books inspired the 1964 Disney movie starring Julie Andrews. She died at age 96 on April 23, 1996. She's seen here, circa 1924, appearing in the role of Titania in "A Midsummer Night's Dream."
