1946: American author Gertrude Stein, who became a cult literary figure as the host of expatriate American artists and writers on the Left Bank of Paris, dies of stomach cancer at age 72 in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France. Stein, who moved to Paris in 1903 and made France her home for the remainder of her life, caught mainstream attention in 1933 with the publication of the memoirs of her Paris years titled "The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas."
