1997: In what will become known as the North Hollywood shootout, two heavily armed and armored bank robbers and Los Angeles police officers fire more than 2,000 rounds of ammunition following a robbery of a Bank of America branch. Both suspects, Larry Phillips Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, were killed in the shootout and 11 police officers and seven civilians were injured.
