1710: Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut, the French soldier and explorer who was the first European known to have visited the headwaters of the Mississippi River in what is now northern Minnesota, dies of gout in Montreal, Canada, around the age of 70. Both the cities of Duluth, Minn., an area he was also the first European to have visited, and Duluth, Ga., are named in his honor.
