1907: Poet W. H. Auden, regarded by many critics as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, is born in York, England. Some of his best known poems include "Funeral Blues" ("Stop all the clocks"), "Musée des Beaux Arts," "Refugee Blues," "The Unknown Citizen" and "September 1, 1939."
