2004: The city of San Francisco, Calif., begins issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in response to a directive from Mayor Gavin Newsom, despite gay marriage being against state law at the time. In August 2004, the Supreme Court of California annulled the marriages that Newsom had authorized.
