1913: Civil rights activist Rosa Parks, best known for her refusal on Dec. 1, 1955, to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus in Montgomery, Ala., is born in Tuskegee, Ala. Parks' act of defiance and the ensuing Montgomery Bus Boycott became important symbols of the modern Civil Rights Movement. She's seen here in 1955 with Martin Luther King Jr. in the background.
