1902: Aviator Charles Lindbergh, the first pilot to fly nonstop from New York to Paris, is born in Detroit, Mich. Lindbergh made his historic solo flight on May 20-21, 1927, in the single-seat, single-engine monoplane Spirit of St. Louis. A U.S. Army Air Corps Reserve officer, he was also awarded the nation's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his historic exploit.
