1901: Baseball's American League is formally organized as a "major league." By the time the 1901 season began in the spring, the league would comprise the Chicago White Stockings, Boston Americans, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Senators, Cleveland Blues and Milwaukee Brewers.
