1951: Steve Prefontaine, a middle and long-distance runner who competed in the 1972 Olympics, finishing fourth in the 5,000 meters race, is born in Coos Bay, Ore. Prefontaine, who once held the American record in the seven distance track events from the 2,000 meters to the 10,000 meters, would die at the age of 24 in May 1975 after flipping his car in a drunken driving accident.
