1911: Eugene B. Ely lands on the deck of the USS Pennsylvania stationed in San Francisco Bay, marking the first time an aircraft landed on a ship. Two months earlier, Ely had performed the first take off from a ship in Hampton Roads, Va., taking off from a makeshift deck on the USS Birmingham in a Curtiss pusher aircraft.
