1978: The English punk rock band Sex Pistols plays their last show, the final date of a U.S. tour at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco. Three days later the band went their separate ways, with lead singer Johnny Rotten flying to New York City and announcing in an interview on Jan. 18 that the band was breaking up.
