1883: Dr. Samuel A. Mudd, who was convicted and imprisoned for aiding and conspiring with John Wilkes Booth in the 1865 assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, dies of pneumonia at the age of 49 in Waldorf, Md. Mudd, who met with Booth several times before the assassination and set, splinted and bandaged Booth's broken leg afterward, was pardoned by President Andrew Johnson and released from prison in 1869.
