1967: Sen. Edward W. Brooke, R-Mass., the first African American elected to the U.S. Senate by popular vote, takes his seat. Brooke, who served two terms, would remain the only black person sent to the Senate in the 20th century until Democrat Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois in 1993.
