1936: Historian Stephen Ambrose, the biographer of U.S. Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and Richard Nixon and the author of many best selling volumes of American popular history, is born in Lovington, Ill. Among his most popular books are 1992's "Band of Brothers, E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne: From Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest" and 1996's "Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the Opening of the American West."
