1941: Folk singer-songwriter Joan Baez, who has performed publicly for more than 50 years and released more than 30 albums, is born in Staten Island, N.Y. Baez performed at the 1969 Woodstock Festival, helped to bring the songs of Bob Dylan to national prominence, and has displayed a lifelong commitment to political and social activism.
