1960: At the Cape Canaveral, Fla., missile test base, the Polaris missile is launched for the first time. The two-stage solid-fuel nuclear-armed submarine-launched ballistic missile would remain in service by the U.S. Navy and the British Royal Navy from 1961 through 1996.
