1871: Gilbert and Sullivan collaborate for the first time, on their lost opera, "Thespis." It does modestly well, but the two would not collaborate again for four years. The pair would end up collaborating on 13 more comic operas, of which "H.M.S. Pinafore," "The Pirates of Penzance" and "The Mikado" are among the best known.
