1980: U.S. President Jimmy Carter signs the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act, also known as CERCLA or Superfund, into law. The law provides broad federal authority to clean up releases or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health or the environment.
