1964: R&B and soul singer Sam Cooke, whose hits included "Cupid," "You Send Me" and "Twistin' the Night Away," is fatally shot by the manager of the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles at the age of 33. The manager, Bertha Franklin, said that she shot Cooke in self-defense after he broke into her office residence and attacked her. A coroner's inquest would later return a verdict of justifiable homicide.
