1967: Soul singer Otis Redding is killed at age 26 when his tour plane crashes into Lake Monona in Madison, Wis. The crash also kills the pilot, Redding's manager and four members of Redding's tour band, the "Bar-Kays," with only band member Ben Cauley escaping alive. Redding's death came just three days after he recorded "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay," which would become his biggest hit and the first posthumous No. 1 record on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts.
