1956: Hall of Fame basketball player Larry Bird, who won three NBA championships with the Boston Celtics during a career that ran from 1979 to 1992, is born in West Baden, Ind. Bird, who was also a 12-time NBA All-Star and was named the league's Most Valuable Player three times, also earned an Olympic gold medal with the 1992 Dream Team.
