1912: Photographer and film director Gordon Parks, who would become best known for his photographic essays for Life magazine and as the director of the 1971 film "Shaft," is born in Fort Scott, Kan. He also would become known for his activism and campaigning for civil rights, as well as for his writing, including his autobiographical novel "The Learning Tree."
